Mobile Communications: MicroNova Joins O-RAN Alliance

Innovations for an open and interoperable radio access network

The main aim of the O-RAN Alliance is to establish an open standard for mobile networks that is independent of individual manufacturers and countries. MicroNova AG is now the alliance's latest member. The company brings many years' worth of knowledge on the topic of radio access network (RAN) management that will be used to support associated industry and research projects.

Innovations for mobile network operators and providers as well as for their end customers from the business and private sectors: The Open-RAN standard faces high expectations that continue to rise as 5G technology is rolled out. At the same time, the alliance responsible for the standard are taking into account the demand for an approach independent of individual manufacturers and countries. To also meet all of the necessary technical requirements, more development work is needed. This is the task of the ever-growing number of O-RAN Alliance members. The latest addition is MicroNova AG, based in Vierkirchen in the north of Munich, Germany.

For many years now, the company has offered a solution for configuring and optimizing radio access networks in the form of COM5.Mobile, which is used by two of the three largest mobile network operators in Germany. Moreover, the COM5.SDN Mediator is the first product to allow the integration of different network technologies (2G, 3G, 4G and 5G) into an SDN-/NFV- or Open-RAN-compliant architecture; beyond this, the strategic roadmap of COM5.SDN ranges from the Radio Controller (SDN-R) to the non-real-time Radio Intelligence Controller (non-RT RIC), which will each offer significant added value in terms of capabilities for managing mobile networks. Joining the O-RAN Alliance means that this technology can now be more easily integrated into corresponding projects that include concepts from fields such as artificial intelligence. In addition, the company views this as an opportunity to get involved in research projects in a university context.

"While Europe is trying to become independent in the cloud environment via the collaborative project GAIA-X, the O-RAN Alliance establishes an alternative in the field of mobile networks to using technology from China. However, as you would expect, the O-RAN standard is intended to prove its worth primarily through innovations and technical added value," explains Dr. Klaus Eder, COO of MicroNova AG. "This is precisely where we come in. For over 30 years now, our team has been implementing its knowledge in telecommunications projects. The radio access network for most German mobile customers is managed using our solutions. This knowhow will also be of use in the O-RAN Alliance. We look forward to working with the other members."
