Electromobility: Test Solutions for Battery Management Systems

NovaCarts cards and modules from MicroNova enable hardware-based and software-based simulations

The new NovaCarts cards from MicroNova are now available. The smart cards and modules can be combined with each other in flexible configurations and can simulate all conditions to which a battery management system (BMS) might be exposed. The solutions are future-proof and designed for the test requirements of future technologies, such as solid-state batteries.

MicroNova is presenting its new BMS test solutions at the Automotive Testing Expo in Stuttgart from June 5 to 7, 2018.

Battery management systems ensure the constant supply of power in electric and hybrid vehicles and provide information about the battery as a whole. They monitor and regulate the state of charge, voltage, current and temperature of each of the several thousand cells. Test systems must simulate all conditions to which the BMS might be exposed realistically and reproducibly. The new cards and modules from MicroNova, with their modular hardware-based and software-based simulations, meet these requirements.

The smart NovaCarts cards can therefore be combined with each other in configurations that can be adapted to the test project, and are also easy to configure for the test requirements of upcoming technologies such as solid-state batteries. This not only saves costs in the simulation of current BMS, including cell controllers, but also offers automotive manufacturers and suppliers long-term investment security. The portfolio ranges from a single card or module to a fully equipped turnkey hybrid hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) system. The individual cards are plug-and-play capable.

Supplementary simulations and models

Special software models, such as a simulation for cell controllers, supplement and extend the NovaCarts cards and modules for BMS testing. The connection uses the I2C bus, which enables communication between various integrated circuits. This allows engineers to test BMS functionality without actually having to connect cell controllers. Consequently, such test systems offer corresponding price advantages, as high-voltage components in the structures can be dispensed with as far as possible.

Furthermore, very demanding test projects, such as those required for the development of lithium-ion (LiIo) starter batteries, can be implemented. This is made possible, among other things, by a physical/electrochemical cell and battery simulation model. “Our simulation model is specially adapted to the requirements of real-time test systems and works ten times faster than standard cell simulations,” explains Martin Bayer, Head of Testing Solutions at MicroNova. “This allows the electrochemical behavior of LiIo cells to be simulated precisely. It also includes the exact modeling of aging and temperature behavior.”

MicroNova at the Automotive Testing Expo 2018

MicroNova’s testing team will be demonstrating the performance of the new cards and software models at booth 1282 in hall 10: Using a NovaCarts battery HiL system with BMS control unit, the experts will be performing a live simulation of the charging and discharging process as well as cell balancing. Visitors will also learn all about the testing solutions from the extensive NovaCarts portfolio.
